Flu season is shaping up as one of the worst in years

The entire nation of the United States is experiencing a flu which is actually widespread currently. This has happened for the first time in thirteen years per the data of the current tracking system from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The officials of the department have stated that this season of the flu is already taking the shape for one of the worst in recent years. The number of hospitalizations for the flu per 100,000 people has almost doubled in the last week as compared to the week before that. In the last week the rate was 22.7 people per 100,000 people and the week before that it was 13.7 which makes it clear that the rate has nearly doubled.

In the years 2014 – 2015, at the peak of the flu season, which was one of the two most severe seasons in about the last fifteen years, 29.9 people out of every 100,000 people were put into hospitals because of the flu. Per the latest data for the week that ended on the 6th of January 2018 clearly suggests that the flu season is at its peak right now. This particular data came from Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald on Friday, who is the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She also issued a warning through news reporters that allot more people will be infected with flu before the flu season finally gets over. She also mentioned that there is a lot of difference between an active season of flu at the time when a lot of people get infected and the season for the flu which is severe at the time when the number of people who are hospitalized for the flu or the ones who die from the infection are unusually very high.

Dr. Dan Jernigan, who is the head of the influenza division of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that it can be extremely difficult to tell in real time whether a flu season will fall down on the scale of severity because of the reports of the number of hospitalizations and especially deaths among children tend to lag behind. He also mentioned that the current data has already started depicting that this year will appear to be a severe season and definitely a more severe one than the previous year.
