The three big cities of the United States, Chicago, New York and Washington saw a significant decrease in the rate of homicides in the previous year of 2017. But on the other hand, the rate of homicide increased in Baltimore, MD amongst drug problems along with lingering racial tensions. The number of murders was definitely down but Washington witnessed some of the most brutal killings that included a gruesome decapitation blamed on a gang and the respective authorities in each of the cities said they still have a lot of work to do.
According to the New York Times the decline in the rate of homicides was quite dramatic in New York. The city experienced about 2,245 killings in the year 1990 as compared to only 286 in the year 2017. This data is as of the 27th of December 2017. The figure of 286 was even less from 334 that was in the year 2016 which represented the lowest number of murders since the 1950s. Most importantly, every major category of crime declined in the city ranging from rape to car theft. This is per reports given by the Times. Indeed, violent crime in the city has declined for 27 straight years.
The city of Chicago suffered the deadliest year of 2016 in the last two decades. The city saw 754 killings in the year 2016 which dropped to 650 in the year of 2017. As per reports from the Chicago Tribune, this total number of drops in the murders is the largest year to year drop since the year 2004. The anti-police sentiment in the city fuelled a surge in violence after a video was released which showed a white police officer fatally shooting a black teenager.
The president of the United States Donald Trump has repeatedly rebuked the authorities of the city of Chicago for allowing violence to always run out of control. But the superintendent of police Eddie Johnson told the Tribune that some new technology and tactics, the hiring of a total of 1,000 additional police officers and several other efforts for the improvement of the relations of police and community had helped in the lowering of the total shootings. The number of arrests for gun crimes rose up by 27 percent. Johnson mentioned in a statement that nobody is satisfied at all with the rate of decrease but they would all work hard in the year 2018 for building on the progress that was achieved in the previous year.
