On Thursday, President of the United States, Donald Trump said that it has become very important to arm the teachers in schools. This statement from Trump came after the massacre that happened last week in Florida. He stated that the arming would be limited to those who have military or special training but would have the ability to solve these kinds of problems on an instant basis. This particular idea from the president has already drawn a very strong divided reaction in a country where there exist some fierce divisions on the agenda about how to curb mass shootings and gun violence on a regular basis. Donald Trump who is a Republican had shown his support for gun rights has now brought forward the idea of arming teachers during a long-lasting discussion which was emotional on Wednesday with the students of the Florida high school who survived the attack.
If the teachers are adequately trained and are proficient with a gun they would be able to solve the problem instantly before the arrival of the police. The US president had a long discussion with the relatives of the survivors of the mass shooting regarding the fact of arming the teachers. At the same time, a lot of other discussions regarding the safety and security of the school and its students were also done. In the mass shooting that took place in Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL, on the 14th of February 2018, a total of 17 students and staff members of the school were killed.
This particular incident is actually the second deadliest shooting taking place at a US public school. Nikolas Cruz who is a former student of the school and is nineteen years of age has been accused as the main culprit. He has been charged with carrying out the shooting. The authorities have stated that he was armed with a semiautomatic AR-15 assault-style rifle. On Wednesday, US president Donald Trump said that he would be taking adequate steps for the tightening of background checks for persons wanting to buy guns and at the same time he said he would also be considering lifting the age limit to buy some kinds of guns. At the meeting on Wednesday, Trump said that if there was a teacher who was proficient with guns this could have been avoided.
